The Rock Pool, cites

Trobar algú a qui poder-li aplicar la frase:
“He felt old and miserable, going through life trying to peddle a personality of which people would not even accept a free sample” (The Rock Pool, p.73).

“There are so few wicked people in the world; the springs of vanity, fear, envy, cupidity and deceit, while sources of the general nastiness of human beings, do not make for moral evil on a grand scale” (The Rock Pool, p.75).

“Never let on you're broke to anyone -see- anyone. It may be the fashion in England [el protagonista és anglès], but over here [són a la Costa Blava], c'est une chose qui ne se fait pas.” (The Rock Pool, p.105).

“He had grown to like the troglodytes [la colònia d'estrangers de Trou-sur-Mer], these fierce, unfashionable expatriates. What was fine in them, their refusal to conform, their independence, their moral courage, was their own; what was weak, their instability, hopelessness and predatory friendships, was the result of a system: of the clumsy capitalist world [ens trobem a l'inici de la Gran Depressió del 29] that exalts money-making and poisons leisure, that suppresses talent, starves its artists, and persecutes its sexual dissenters, that denies opportunity, infects charity, and encourages only the vulgarity of competition, the triumphs, the suspition, the heart-break of the acquisitive life.” (The Rock Pool, p.128-9).
